NYSCOPBA on Display at the Legislative Office Building |
NYSCOPBA has erected a display in the NYS Legislative Office Building highlighting some of our arguments against prison closures. The display is in the "Well" of the LOB and will be displayed the week of March 8-12, 2010. The display is in a high traffic area and will be viewed by thousands of the most influential people in New York State.
The display includes pictures of Superintendents' Mansions, salary charts of DOCS Building 2 administrators, charts that DOCS manipulated, photos showing multiple prisons on the same property that could combine administrations and much more.
The display also includes a full scale replica of a cell with a double bunk to show the cramped quarters that double bunked inmates live in. Our point is that inmates subjected to these conditions become more aggressive and cause problems in the prison setting. We argue that the double bunks should be taken down and the inmates from the double bunks can occupy the "vacant" beds in other prisons. Taking down the double bunks will relieve tension and overcrowding in the prison system.
As part of our ongoing efforts to have our message heard, NYSCOPBA members came to the NYS LOB on Monday, 3/8/10 and met with over 25 key legislators and their staff to make our message heard loud and clear.
