CO Dent Receives Valor Award

After completing his shift on 11/9/14, Officer Dent was at home preparing for bed when he heard a loud crash outside his home. Going outside, he saw an SUV on its side and the entire front half of the vehicle on fire. Without hesitation, CO Dent used two fire extinguishers to extinguish the blaze and kept the girls calm and alert until the Fire Company arrived. The driver of the vehicle was too severly injured to move. NYSCOPBA recognizes Officer Dent for this selfless and brave act which surely saved these girls from greater harm.

ISO’s Rodd and Escoto Receive Valor Awards

While working in the Brooklyn Community Supervision Office, Institutional Safety Officers Michael Rodd and Carlos Escoto heard shots fired outside the office. Going outside they found two parolees in a heated argument with one possessing a gun. Officers Rodd and Escoto managed to gain control of the situation and gain possession of the weapon preventing any innocent bystanders, the parolees or themselves from danger until help arrived. They are commended for their bravery.

Washington CF Donates to Homeless Shelter

CO Appreciation Hockey Night Game

On Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 7:00 PM, the Adirondack Flames held a New York State Corrections Officers Appreciation Night at their game against the Utica Comets at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Chris Hanson, NYSCOPBA Northern Region Vice President, presented Adirondack Youth Hockey Association with a check for $1200.

In a letter to the editor: The Mooers Elementary School would like to thank the members of the Clinton Correctional Facility union NYSCOPBA for again sponsoring the Santa Holiday Express Program. Their donations made it possible for gifts to be purchased and given to many students in our community. Through the kindness and generosity of NYSCOPBA, many families were better able to enjoy the holidays. Programs such as this involve a great deal of coordination and commitment. A special thank you as well to Shane Muller, who invited us to participate, personally shopped for the gifts and delivered them, as well.

Green Haven’s Make a Child Smile Program

NYSCOPBA Members from Green Haven Correctional Facility, in coordination with Clear Channel Communications, participated in the Greater Hudson Valley Toy Drive at the Poughkeepsie Galleria in December. Over $3700 in toys were donated to needy children in the area.

Western Region donates Women & Children’s Hospital

New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association members from Gowanda Correctional Facility paid an early visit to patients at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo earlier this month.

Three correctional officers from the facility were accompanied by hospital staff as they distributed two gurney loads of toys and gifts to kids whose illnesses have caused them to be hospitalized during this holiday season.

The toys and gift cards were purchased through a generous donation from the membership of more than $1,500. Full Story

Attica CO Donates to PTSD Program

Officers from the Attica Correctional Facility donated $5,000 in union funds to Batavia Veterans Affairs Hospital’s Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Program.Union leaders said that many of their own members come from the military.The Officers also donated $1,500 worth of food and toys for Christmas.

NYSCOPBA Donates to Employee Assistance Program

This past holiday season, the Creedmoor PC Employee Assistance Program asked NYSCOPBA to contribute $150.00 to purchase 3 gift cards valued at $50.00 to be given out to a member in need. On 12/17/14, a check was presented to Officer Kenneth Gray and Officer George Williams. The Officers were shocked and apprieciative and thanked the EAP Committee and NYSCOPBA for showing their care and support.

Attica Donates for Thanksgiving

The Guard Staff of Attica Prison donated $1,500 in food items to the Wyoming County Community Action Center in Perry, NY. Thanksgiving Dinners were provided and delivered to dozens of Wyoming County families.

Sergeant James Barney Memorial Soft Ball

A 14 team co-ed softball tournament held on September 6 and 7 raised over $15,000 for the five children of James and Kim Barney, who were both tragically killed by a reckless driver in Ray Brook this past July. The Sgt. James Barney Memorial Co-ed Softball Tournament was organized and held at the Roger Quinn Memorial Softball Field. Hundreds of players, spectators and volunteers participated in the fund raising effort to support the Barney’s children. Great job by all the NYSCOPBA members and family who made this tournament a great success.

Public Safety Officer receives SUNY Chancellor’s Award

Jamie Enwright’s more than two decades of service to SUNY Oswego as a member of the college’s University Police staff has been recognized with a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service.

Enwright said she was “overwhelmed” by the honor when college President Deborah F. Stanley called to tell her of the award. More

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge at Sing Sing

Staff members at DOCCS have been added to the long list of people who have doused themselves for a good cause. This month staff members at Sing Sing Correctional Facility (Westchester County) doused themselves with ice water in front of the Administration building to raise awareness for ALS. The facility challenged all other NYS Correctional Facilities to respond. Sing Sing raised $2,000 dollars for the ALS Foundation. More

9th Annual Laura Giordiano 5K

Shawangunk Correctional Facility (Ulster County) hosted the 9th Annual Laura Giordiano 5K in honor of Correction Officer Giordiano who served the facility with distinction until her passing after a long battle with breast cancer. The proceeds each year are donated to breast cancer research and the Employee Recreation Committee who sponsors the event. Giordiano started her career in 1989 and died at the age of 45 in 2005. Seventy-five runners and walkers participated in this year’s race and all participants were treated to a barbecue. More here…

Attica Participates in the 2nd Annual KIA Road March

Ten members from Attica participated in the second annual KIA Road March on Aug.23rd in Orchard Park. The 10k march had team member carry a pack of donated food totaling more than 450lbs collectively. All proceeds and food went to help WNY Veteran Organizations.

NYSCOPBA hosted the 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on August 12. The event was a great success and $4,500 was donated to the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF).

NYSCOPBA Sponsors Lunch Program

NYSCOPBA supported the First Victory Christian Church’s Safe Summer Feeding Program by providing two vans for Pastor Charlie Mueller to use to transport lunches to upwards of a thousand kids a day in the City of Albany. Pastor Mueller provides lunches each day to underprivileged kids in the City of Albany and surrounding areas. They serve 600 to 1000 kids each day at city parks. NYSCOPBA was proud to support this great program for the second straight year

NYSCOPBA Members Raise $10,000 at Local Fundraiser

NYSCOPBA members from Bare Hill, Upstate and Franklin Correctional Facilities organized a fundraiser last week that raised $10,000 for a Deputy Superintendent of Security and a Correction Officer’s son that were recently diagnosed with cancer. The members of all three facilities organized the fundraiser on May 17, 2014 at the Quality of Work Life Building. Members created gift baskets with a wide variety of goods that were donated by local businesses in the community. They also held raffles and served take out meals throughout the day that contributed to the cause. The money raised will be used to supplement medical, travel and incidental costs associated with treatment. Press Release

NYSCOPBA's Clinton CF Members sponsored the AVON Breast Cancer Walk. They sponsored team "ourSiSterskeepers"; Mary Lamar and Darcel Russell. Mary and Darcel went to Boston and walked 40 miles over two days to support breast cancer research and care of patients and their families. The event is held in eight cities and this year, 1,700 dedicated walkers raised 3.9 million dollars. Our thanks to our generous Members at Clinton CF and to Mary and Darcel for their commitment to such a worthy cause.
