NYSCOPBA wants to recognize the extraordinary courage, professionalism, and selfless actions of NYS DOCCS Correctional Officer Sam Murdoch.
In a moment of chaos and danger, Officer Murdoch did not hesitate. Faced with a vicious assault by an incarcerated individual, he immediately placed himself between a civilian and a serious threat, acting decisively to protect another person without regard for his own safety. His swift response undoubtedly prevented further harm and demonstrated the very best qualities of a New York State Correctional Officer.
Every day, correctional officers are called upon to make difficult decisions under intense pressure. Most of those moments go unseen by the public. Yet when confronted with a critical incident, Officer Murdoch exemplified the courage, training, and commitment that define this profession. He understood that someone needed help, and he acted without hesitation.
His actions reflect not only personal bravery but also the values of NYSCOPBA and the correctional officers we proudly represent. Officer Murdoch demonstrated honor, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of others. He placed the life and safety of a civilian above his own concerns, embodying the highest standards of public service.
On behalf of his fellow correction officers and the membership of NYSCOPBA, we extend our sincere gratitude and admiration to Officer Murdoch. His courage serves as a reminder of the sacrifices correctional officers make every day and the critical role they play in maintaining safety and security.
Officer Murdoch’s actions brought great credit upon himself, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, and NYSCOPBA. We are proud to call him a brother officer, and we thank him for his bravery, professionalism, and dedication to protecting others.
